My Collecting Story
My Nanny: This is who actually started my collecting. At the age of 9, she took all the cards she had collected during Michael Jordan's playing career (late 80s, early 90s) and split the THOUSANDS of cards she had between myself and my little brother Jeb (6).
I was absolutely fascinated with cards, as I was already obsessed with my UNC Tar Heels (which was also thanks to my Nanny's fanhood of the Heels). My younger brother's favorite player was Scottie Pippen, and mine was of course Michael Jordan- which resulted in all of my Pippens being traded for his Jordans; I think I came out okay there :) Any time my Nanny discovered more cards in her house, she would have me come over and she would give them to me- and I'd sort them into teams with a huge smile on my face. As a kid, I was a very picky eater. I didn't like mashed potatoes. My Nanny used to make me take bites of them (in attempt to break my pickiness) in exchange for UNC basketball cards too. I remember the Jordan UNC card was 10 bites. After I finished eating them, they asked if I liked them now- and I said "nope, but I wanted that card!" That was 2000, and now not much has changed- I still don't like potatoes, and I'm picky- and I still love cards. For that, I have to thank my Nanny for getting me started on a passion I will have & enjoy for the rest of my life. She passed away on December 11th, 2015. She's now "Jumping Around" with my Paw, and Dean Smith before every Tar Heels basketball game. RIP Nanny, Jake loves you. |
